Archaeologists Claim They've Found Lost City Of Atlantis

Undersea archaeologists have found the ruins of an ancient city on the bottom of the Caribbean Sea, and researchers claim that it is the fabled and lost city of Atlantis. The satellite photos do show something that could be a city, and the researchers believe that what they've found would predate the pyramids of Egypt. Indeed they claim to be able to make out a pyramid and other city-like structures from the satellite photos.

The archaeologists have so far refused to divulge their identities or the location in the Caribbean. They say they are raising money for an expedition to confirm their findings.

Giant Pyramid UFO 'Hovers Over Moscow'

A mysterious 'UFO' seen in the sky over Moscow has sparked speculation that the city has been visited by an alien spacecraft.

The pyramid-shaped object was said to have remained for hours over the Red Square in the Russian capital.

The fuzzy grey shape was apparently captured on film in at least two separate videos - one filmed during the daytime and another at night - which became an online sensation.

But sceptics suggested there would be thousands of videos, rather than just two, if the object really had remained in the skies for hours.

Russian police have not commented on the alleged sightings.

The reports of the pyramid come just days after a Russian missile launch set off a spate of UFO sightings in Norway.

The dramatic light spiral seen over the north of the country prompted theories that it was caused by a meteor, the Northern Lights or even aliens.

However, Russia later revealed that its test-firing of a new intercontinental missile had ended in failure - at the same time as observers witnessed the early morning light show.

Switching a Gene in Adult Mice Easily Transforms Females Into Males

Apparently men and women are not that different after all. In fact, the sexes are so similar that women have to fight their entire lives just to remain women -- at least on the genetic level.

A new study finds that turning off just one gene, shared by all mammals, turns ovarian cells into testosterone-producing cells found only in the testes -- and this is in adults.

In the study, published in the new issue of the journal Cell, researchers knocked out a female-promoting gene in adult female mice. The FoxL2 gene works by suppressing a male gene. When FoxL2 is switched off, the male gene, called Sox9, takes over, sending signals that turn ovarian cells into cells normally found only in the testes. The female mice produced as much testosterone as male mice, about 100 times higher than the concentrations normally found in females. Essentially, the ovaries turn into testes.

A mouse with this gene manipulation is able to produce male sex hormones, but is infertile, the researchers say.

The findings suggest that maintenance of womanhood, or at least of the ovarian phenotype, is an active process throughout life, according to the researchers. The constant struggle between female and male genes could help explain changes like facial hair and a deeper voice among post-menopausal women, for instance. It could also illuminate genetic issues in transsexual people, perhaps explaining why some seek gender-reassignment surgery.

Co-author Robin Lovell-Badge, from the Medical Research Council's National Institute of Medical Research in north London, told the Independent newspaper that the therapy could provide an alternative to those surgeries.

"It's still very speculative, but it's possible that this approach could produce an alternative to surgery and the removal of gonads -- ovaries and testes," Lovell-Badge said.

The gene is shared among mammals, so it's not related to the rise of intersex fish throughout the U.S. Gender transformation is common among some fish species, and even the unusual increase in intersex black bass can be attributed to synthetic human hormones in the water supply, rather than a genetic change.

While it appears easy to genetically transform female mice into males, the study does not discuss going the other way. But in humans, a male-to-female surgical operation is somewhat simpler than a female-to-male operation, according to a 1996 study from the British Journal of Sexual Medicine. The relatively small body of research on the subject also suggests male-to-female operations are more common than female-to-male operations. The gene knockout could be a simpler method for female-to-male transformation.

World Largest Solar Powered Office Building

China, constantly straddling the line between super-polluter and clean tech pioneer, has unveiled what for the time being is the world’s largest solar-powered office building .
The fan-like roof of the 800,000 square-foot facility located in Dezhou in Shangdong Province was cleverly designed to resemble an ancient sun dial, though rather than ticking off the passing hours, the building houses exhibition centers, research facilities, meeting and convention spaces and a hotel, all of which are powered by the hundreds of solar panels adorning its roof.

A lack of fossil fuel burning indeed makes the building decidedly green, but it’s architecture hides several other energy- and resource-saving innovations like advanced wall insulation and roofing that help trim 30% its energy consumption compared to the national average. And while massive, the external structure actually uses 1% of the steel that the People’s Republic poured into the Bird’s Nest for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Of course, it would be folly to think that China will hold the title of “world’s largest solar powered building” for long with Abu Dhabi just getting underway on its much-ballyhooed Masdar City in February. The centerpiece of the development–the world’s first sustainable city–will be a $22 billion, 1.4 million square-foot solar building that is energy positive; that is, it will actually produce more power than it needs.

That’s all assuming, of course, Abu Dhabi doesn’t go broke in the meantime. Masdar City won’t be complete until 2016, but Masdar’s solar HQ is part of phase one of the process and should be complete by the end of next year.

Human remains in kebabs and pies

A trio of homeless men were, arrested in Russia after they sold body parts to a food kiosk that sell kebabs and pies, suspicion arose when a dismembered body was found near a bus stop on the outskirts of the Russian City of Perm. The homeless men are accused of murdering the man, chopping up his body, eating part of it and selling other parts to the kebab house.

It is not yet know if any parts of the man have been used in either kebabs or pies that have been sold to the unsuspecting public, the horrific details came to light when a statement had been released on the detective’s website mentioning that there could be human remains in some pies or kebabs. Russian police have said all 3 of the men arrested do have criminal records, they had stabbed and beat the 25 year old until he died, in an act of “personal hostility toward the victim,” the Perm branch of Russia’s investigative committee, have said. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.

A young Chinese girl recently had surgery to remove a needle that was lodged in her head the needle inside the child’s brain had pierced a main blood vessel, and had caused the child to be under developed with mental deficiencies. The young girl was treated at a military hospital in the south western city of Chengdu, the deputy director of the neurosurgery department at the hospital had stated “there was a common belief in the countryside that sticking a needle into the head would result in death.”

In China people are often so desperate for a son in the family it is thought the little girls relatives tried to kill her by jamming the needle into her head. The mother had previously aborted a baby after it was discovered it was to be a girl following pressure from her mother in law, however on becoming pregnant a second time with a girl she carried on with the pregnancy. The mother of the child guesses the needle had probably been inserted when her child was only about 4 days old as that was when she started noticing changes. The mother of the child has said that she would try to bring charges against the relatives who were responsible for the attempted murder of her daughter.

This is not an uncommon practice in China as they operate a strict one couple, one child family planning policy many baby girls are often killed by relatives or dumped into orphanages so the family can try again for a son.

"Around 9am, on 25 October of year 1988, when we were chatting around, suddenly we saw a strange light came from the North West direction.

After it came out, it suddenly become larger and larger, then it changes it direction from clockwise to anti clockwise. All of us were stun by this strange phenomenon. What was that? We all never saw it before. When I first saw it, it gave me a feeling that this is not part of our normal weather, maybe it is an unknown object or UFO."

From this video, we can see that this is an amazing phenomenon. Sparks of light fly to the sky in a high speed, and suddenly spread in spiral form. The weirdest thing is this spiral change direction from clockwise to anticlockwise suddenly when it was spinning. This strange direction-changing phenomenon cannot be seeing from photo capturing.

Russia admits missile caused UFO lights

A spectacular spiral light show in the sky above Norway on Wednesday was caused by a Russian missile that failed just after launch, according to Russia's defense ministry.

When the rocket motor spun out of control, it likely created the heavenly spiral of white light near where the missile was launched from a submarine in the White Sea.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that a Bulava ballistic missile test had failed.

It has been established ... that the missile's first two stages worked as normal, but there was a technical malfunction at the next, third, stage of the trajectory," Reuters quoted a Defense Ministry spokesman as saying.

Paal Brekke, a senior adviser at the Norwegian Space Centre Drammensvn, told Space.com that the cloud was "very spectacular."

"When we looked at the videos people submitted to the media, we quickly concluded that it looked like a rocket or missile out of control, thus the spiraling effect," Brekke said. "I think this is the first time we have seen such a display from a launch failure."

The phenomenon was seen by people all over northern Norway.

"It was a fairly stunning display, and we were really surprised to see it so well-observed," Brekke said.

Viewers described an eerie white cloud with a piercing blue-green beam coming out of it.

"It consisted initially of a green beam of light similar in color to the aurora with a mysterious rotating spiral at one end," Nick Banbury of Harstad, Norway, told Spaceweather.com. "This spiral then got bigger and bigger until it turned into a huge halo in the sky with the green beam extending down to Earth."

Banbury said he saw the lights on his way to work between 7:50 and 8 a.m. local time, or 1:50 to 2 a.m. ET Wednesday.

"We are used to seeing lots of auroras here in Norway, but this was different," he said.
Before the missile test was confirmed, many people suggested the bright light pattern might have been a UFO. Russia finally admitted to the accident, which is an embarrassing mishap for a rocket that had already failed six of 13 previous tests, according to the BBC.

The Bulava missile is designed to carry six individually targeted nuclear warheads over a range of up to 6,200 miles (10,000 km), the BBC reported. The missile had been touted as Russia's newest technological breakthrough to support its nuclear deterrent, but the numerous failures have led to second thoughts.

"This is a catastrophe ... Huge funds were siphoned off from Russia's moribund navy for the Bulava project. In fact, billions of dollars have been flushed down the drain," Alexander Khramchikhin, chief analyst at the Moscow-based Institute of Military and Political Analysis, told Reuters.

Analysts criticize Moscow's hurry to build the Bulava, as it already has a highly reliable Soviet-built Sineva submarine-based ballistic missile. They also question awarding the Bulava contract to the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology, which has never before built missiles for submarines.

Remarkable Shadown Art

British-born and -based artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster skilfully skirt the boundaries between beauty and the shadowier aspects of humanity, playing with our perceptions as well as our notions of taste. Many of their most notable pieces are made from piles of rubbish, with light projected against them to create a shadow image entirely different to that seen when looking directly at the deliberately disguised pile.

The photo above shows White Trash (With Gulls), one of Webster and Noble’s earliest trash-based pieces. Six months’ worth of household waste plus a pair of dead seagulls comprise the heap of refuse. It’s no accident that it took the couple a further six months to make the piece, during which time they were eating and consuming – as you do. On the wall, the shadow figure self-portraits of the artists take a break with a cigarette and a glass of wine.

Less within the domain of disgust, the trash pile in Real Life Is Rubbish is constructed out of studio instead of everyday waste. Tools that the artists would eventually run out of – like a screwdriver that serves as Noble’s nose – and discarded items such as used up brass polish are piled together. Out of the apparent jumble of chaos, two perfectly formed silhouettes of the artists emerge.

That the next piece, entitled HE/SHE, looks to display shadows of Noble and Webster urinating is less shocking given that the artists have often chosen to deal with ostensibly cruder themes in their collaborative work. Having met whilst studying at university in Nottingham in the late ’80s, the couple later moved to London, where they gained a reputation for being rebels of the art scene, not content with the position of artist as celebrity.

Notwithstanding their distaste for the conventional, Webster and Noble’s sculptures and installations are not only brilliantly conceived but consummately executed. The second image above of HE/SHE shows more clearly the junk sculpture from which the image of Noble emerges in the light of the projector.

Not all of Noble and Webster’s work uses low grade materials drawn from the rubbish dump or the scrap yard – like this welded scrap metal piece of rat love. No, some of it borrows from the aesthetics of the shopping mall or the Las Vegas light show, with flashing displays and gaudy neon inspired by some of the most crass that culture has to offer. As far as the artists are concerned, it’s all worth recycling.

Yet the idea of reusing materials to create art gets one of its most visceral treatments in this last piece. Casting the by now familiar shadows of the artists’ profiled heads – severed and impaled on spikes in this case – the sculptures are composed of various mummified animals. A nod, perhaps, to aspects of popular culture like vulgar living history, it’s another work by this irreverent pair that might mean you now look at all kinds of trash and waste in a rather different light.

These contemporary or postmodern artists have developed a technique to demonstrate their creativity through working something out of immaterial pieces of metal scraps or, to put it bluntly, junk – and cast awe-inspiring shadows by combining art and illusion – darkness and light.

Although this may not be entirely new, this could only be done perfectly by real talented artists who see way beyond the physical and visual attributes of things utilized to create shadow art or as the pioneering optical illusion and shadow artist Shigeo Fukuda refers to as shadow sculpture.

Lunch with a Helmet On is one of Fukuda’s earliest works which was made out of an assortment of 848 forks, knives and spoons welded together.

He was also successful in constructing shadow images using clamps and three dimensional models. This is a screenshot from its the-making video.

While it is evident that Fukuda used clamps and cutlery for his artworks, the Londoners Tim Noble and Sue Webster attempted to make use of amassed rubbish and light directed towards the heaps of trash to create peculiar shadow images on the wall – and became known for its impressive outcome.

In stating that shadow art can be produced with the use of innovative lighting techniques, it doesn’t limit a person on what design materials to utilize – as long as the concept is clear and original. Fred Eerdekens thought of clothing, carton boxes, steel (copper and aluminum) and Styrofoam to mold shadows in an astounding manner – a style distinctive of his own.

Despite these artworks’ imposing quality, there are still skeptics who plague them with doubt saying that these pictures are apparently fake. But it is important to note that Fukuda, Noble, Webster and Eerdekens are gifted and exceptional artists and not Photoshop experts. If they and these are all fake, who would be impressed? Who would attend their exhibits and proclaim that it is authentic? To be famous is easy, staying famous is hard – you have to constantly prove and convince people that you deserve being on the top. Funny how some people find ways to turn brilliant things into rubbish – well, you cannot change the fact that shadow art is rubbish turned into brilliant things, right? Anyway, you be the judge.

Weird Giant Spiral Seen in Sky over Norway

Apparently, this is not a Photoshopped image, as there are several more just like it, taken from various locations. This morning in northern Norway, people saw a strange light in the sky which shocked residents and so far, the phenomenon has yet to be explained. This picture was taken from a pier, looking to the east, approximately at 07.50 am local time. "I can imagine that it went on for two, three minutes," said the photographer Jan Petter Jørgensen. "It was unbelievable. I was quite shaken when I saw it."

"It consisted initially of a green beam of light similar in colour to the aurora with a mysterious rotating spiral at one end," said another eyewitness, Nick Banbury of Harstad, quoted on Spaceweather.com. "This spiral then got bigger and bigger until it turned into a huge halo in the sky with the green beam extending down to the . According to the press, this could be seen all over northern norway and must therefore have been very high up in the atmosphere to be seen hundreds of km apart." "[A popular] suggestion at the moment is that it was a rocket shot up by a Russian submarine in the White Sea, but the Russians deny this apparently. A big mystery indeed!"
According to NRK, there were advance warnings about several Russian missile launches from the White Sea from December 7-10, but an anonymous source in the Northern Fleet said they had no information about the incident. Press Attaché from Russia’s Embassy in Oslo, Vladimir Isupov, did not have any immediate information that could explain the light phenomenon over Northern Norway.

Another eyewitness said, "We saw it from the Inner Harbor in Tromsø. It was absolutely fantastic. It almost looked like a rocket that spun around and around, and then went diagonally down the heavens. It looked like the moon was coming over the mountain, but then came something completely different, "said Totto Eriksen.

I also received a report today from a geophysicist in Papua, Indonesia who observed "an enormous flare (bolide?) visible here at Tomage (2°39'27"S 132°59'27"E), and the sighting was at a bearing approximately 165 (East of South) and the flare seemed to begin at about 30 degrees above the horizon." Paul Anderson said the date and time of the flare was approximately 2009.12.09 12:39 UTC

"I have seen meteors all my life but this was extraordinarily bright and lit up the sky. Not sure what the trajectory was aside from a slight (15 degrees, perhaps) trend to the West but this should probably be known
somewhere. My guess is it entered steeply from the North," he said.
